Pros: This device does what I need. I know other reviews mentioned various issues, but my needs were simple, I wanted a network storage device to back up all the PCs in my house in addition to acting as a media server for music, movies etc. In these functions, it has excelled. The device itself has worked flawlessly since I turned it on. There is an online manual far more detailed then the one that comes with it, I recommend reading the entire thing, as I did, before turning it on, as there is a special first time activation sequence. Also, go get the newest firmware first. The web settings interface for this device is simple and easy for a NAS novice such as myself and I properly set up the RAID type I wanted, hibernation modes, system and DLNA folders and more with a few hours of turning it on.The Cosmonaut backup software that comes with it has also worked without a hitch, both setting a scheduled backup for the 4 PCs on my network and a live, constant sync for select folders.
Cons: I’ve not encountered many cons with the device itself other than that the manual that came with it was brief and not useful. Again, before you do anything, go online and get the online manual, far more detailed and helpful. Other cons were not due to the NAS itself but my own network issues…see below. Other Thoughts: Be sure you have more than a basic knowledge of networking before you attempt to set a NAS up. I do (building PCs for 8 years, but less work on networking), but was tested by some difficulties. First, I have a two router set up, and even after setting the gateway router to handle IP distribution and the secondary router to an access point and setting a static IP on the NAS (this has to be done) I was getting server disconnection issues. Turns out UPNP, actived in my gateway router and the NAS was causing this for some reason, disabling it everywhere stopped the problem and the NAS has been working perfectly, backing up and streaming media for over a week. However, figuring out this silly problem took me an entire week and 1,000 different router and server changes!I would also like to point out, somewhere here a reviewed stated the attached Blu Ray could not rip content. Well, it can. Set up ISCSI and all networked PCs can access it, burn and rip content right to it or other devices
Pros: Fair hardware so far and I good for suing it as a external hard drive.
Cons: Lacks documentation; the manual is outdated. There are some improvements in its firmware but still lacks mail server, which probably is important if you want to use the web server functionality. Other Thoughts: Other companies offer NAS with mail server functionality and its documentation are way more extensive.Could be an excellent product if its software issues are properly addressed.
Pros: I bought the “Diskless” version….I put in a pair of 500GB drives and I was up and working in about an hour. It is low power, and has many options for hibernation based on soft-configurations, time of day. I use it for my home network of 5 PCs.Other, not advertised PROs include:Linux-based….I put an aftermarket load of the latest firmware which supports Telnet, SSH, TFTP. Having Telnet/SSH root access to it allows me to configure just about any network service out there. Being a network engineering proffesional, this NAS allowed me to eliminate my other two network servers by just offloading the funtions to it, such as TFTP, FTP, NTP, DNS, DHCP, and other services. The print server function is cool also. I removed my old print-server and now use this!Yet another device eliminated from the network.
Cons: Load the newest firmware…..do it first thing!I did that and avoided many of the CONS described by others. Other Thoughts: Buy an UPS also…..high availability is more than just a raid NAS. It needs to be protected from power failures.

Pros: Works Great
Cons: No Cons
Pros: It set up pretty easily and quickly depending on the setup you choose.Works as described…
Cons: USB printer hookup didn’t work for me. I am on a mac system and the help files suggested samba. However, it just wasn’t that important to me. Other Thoughts: Haven’t tried the Blu-Ray Re-writer as of yet.
Pros: Easy to install, fairly easy to use, nice looking unit, USB expandability, competitively priced. The software is a bit clunky, but functional and does what you need it to do. You can schedule the drive to hibernate and it shuts down attached USB devices during hibernation as well. Upgradeable to larger capacity (see other thoughts, below).
Cons: USB connectivity is limited to the physical ports on the unit (you cannot connect this thing to a USB hub – it doesn’t work). The print server capability is also limited to a single printer at a time. I set it up and used it a couple of times and it was goofy and slow and I just gave up on it. Also – the drives have to spin up whenever you access them and that slows things down a bit as well. For whatever reason I frequently get issues with the system telling me that I can’t log into the device twice (which, I’m not). That is pretty frustrating. Interestingly – I’ve found this happens with my SSD and didn’t happen at all when I was using a HDD on my computer. Other Thoughts: Support on the website is dicey, but once you do get through to the company’s support team they are fairly responsive. The system comes with Comnso Backup (aka Ice Backup) which is a real time backup software. IT totally saved my bacon when the SSD in my system failed because it had everything backed up right up to the point of failure (sweet!). I also found out that you can upgrade the drives on this unit all the way to 2TB, but going to 3TB is not recommended.
Pros: Relatively Cheap for a Blu-Ray burner, it is not a bad deal if you want to make use of the BR drive. It is quiet and has some relatively fast drives. While the use of the e-Sata port is not obvious or documented it is useful. A drive connected to the e-Sata port is available at the root in smb. There is no access control or protection allowed for these drives in the current firmware but perhaps that can be added in a later release. Further the e-Sata port supports port multiplying so if you have an enclosure with multiple drives chances are good this NAS can mount all the drives.
Cons: This product is in some parts misleading in the advertising and in other places outright lying. 1) FTPS is listed as an available but I have tried a number of applications and none allow connection. I connect using FTPS to other boxes without problems every day. Even if FTPS is enabled, which I doubt since neither 990 or 989 are open, there is no way to REQUIRE FTPS and not allow http://FTP.2) The manual lists NFS as a supported protocol. As of this moment this is an outright lie. The directions for connecting to “NFS” in the manual are explaining how to connect to samba in gnome. A port scan confirms that NFS is not open. How anyone even vaguely familiar with *nix can confuse connecting to NFS with samba is beyond me. Other Thoughts: Performance using Samba is mediocre at best. Proper FTPS or better yet SFTP support is a must. While the system is Linux based it does not recognize EXT4. This is not major problem but EXT4 support would be nice.Further the ability to map volumes to iscsi, especially ones on the e-sata port, would be a tremendous boon to the system and should not impose a significant burden beyond the current iscsi support. This would justify the cost of the NAS multiple times over, but given they have not even gotten the fundamentals yet this seems like wishing for the moon.I am keeping the NAS and can make use of it, but the false documentation of port support is disappointing.
Pros: The NAS shipped with 2 Hitachi 7K1000.B drives which are very quiet. The web interface for managing the device is clean and works well. Transfer rates are good. I have tested the USB/CardSlot backup, iSCSI for the Blu-Ray drive (works on both Windows and Linux), as well as both FTP and Windows Share access. Everything works well. The display makes it easy to look up the IP address of the NAS as well as backup a USB drive or SD card without the need to even connect to it with a computer once it’s configured. (Each card/USB drive must be configured first to ensure files are copied appropriately.)The unit also, while larger than an external hard drive, doesn’t take up too much space on a desk and has a clean look.
Cons: – Because I use Linux primarily and my file system allows the use of characters which many others do not, I have had some problems backing up files from my desktop. I haven’t had any such problems when using Windows. I didn’t mark down the rating as I haven’t tried to resolve the issue with Support (compressing my backups into a zip file is a simple work-around).- The navigation menu on the web interface uses Flash which can be a problem for some Linux users. (Also didn’t mark down because I haven’t tested this without Flash enabled.) Other Thoughts: For those not familiar with iSCSI, this device lets you allow the Blu-Ray burner to be attached to computers on the network as if it’s a local drive which makes burning disks from your desktop possible instead of using the web interface and copying files to the NAS first.I haven’t used any of the software that was included on the CD because I primarily use Linux, so I can’t testify to it’s quality.Overall it’s appears to be a nice, well designed product with many more features than I expected for the price and one I’ll use for a long time. I’d buy it again if given the opportunity.
Pros: Ok so the hardware works really well… I am using it as a mirror so I have 1TB of space. I have not yet used the Blue Ray yet but all in all it seems to be a nice unit.
Cons: Software has a lot to be desired. First, on my XP computer the setup is in another language that can not be changed to English. I have tried to uninstall reinstall and everything in between. 2nd The “real time” isn’t real time. The best way to explain it is part time. I am not sure what controls it but sometimes it is very real time and others not so much. I have looked for software updates on the manufacture web site (not LG) with VERY little success. I contacted support via live chat and I think I had an idiot. Also the FTP is a bit hit or miss but works somewhat ok. Other Thoughts: I guess when it comes right down to it, the unit was not a bad price for 2TB of network storage however if the software worked a bit better it would be a great unit. However!!! Newegg is great! Shipping was super super FAST!
