This was an upgrade from Canon 50D Great Camera Not light, be prepared for the weight. You should know what you are doing with the different settings and programs. My 50D had more auto programs, made it easier for those lazy days. This is definitely for more professional/serious hobbyist. For a more everyday, go for a Canon Rebel T3i

This has just about everything you could want. Awesome picture quality, fast shutter speeds, 23 active auto focus zones and 1080P video.

This camera is definately not for a beginner. If you are shooting in AUTO, don’t waste your money. You should go with a beginner level DSLR. This is my second DSLR and I am completely amazed. I graduated from a Sony a300 to the Canon 7D. It was is a huge difference. The images are so much sharper. I have had trouble with the auto focus not wanting to focus where I need it. And it is slightly difficult to learn how to toggle the focus only using the manual. But, that is a very small issue. This camera is very heavy. You definately don’t want to take this big thing on vacation. But it feels very sturdy. The 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 lens is nice, but it is a kit lens… It is not the quality lens that a professional should be using. I will be upgrading to a f2.8 zoom lens when I can afford it. The biggest downfall of this camera is the price. But if you are a photographer, you can just consider it an investment.

I finally upgraded from my first digital rebel in 2004 to EOS 7D and I’m glad I did. This camera has so many great features. The clarity and detail of the photo’s is just amazing. Works extremely well for a crop camera. If your looking to upgrade from a rebel this is a great camera to move up to. And I picked up Canon Speedlite 580 EX II External Flash to go with it. Btw, I recommend the Canon Speedlite 580 EX II External Flash not the 430. I wasn’t given the option to choose the 580 EX II on here.

This camera is truly amazing, but you should not purchase it if you are a beginner. There are functions that are manual that might confuse someone if they are trying to get into photography. I like this one better than the 5D Mark II so far.

Nice camera it takes good quality pictures but if you are a beginner buy a cheaper one because you won’t use all the features this camera offers.

Can’t go wrong with this camera. Even better than the 5D in my opinion. Faster burst rate. Buy body only and get lenses on your own. Kit lenses do not do this camera justice. I love my Canon 50mm f1.4, wide angle and fish eye on this camera.

This camera is great. The weight is perfect, and feels extremely sturdy. Picture quality is fantastic, and it is fairly easy to figure out. One excellent feature is the autofocus, as it is extremely fast and sharp. I would recommend this camera again and again…its wonderful.

Just upgraded from a Rebel. This is an excellent camera with lots of features. I had to buy a book to really learn how to tap into what the camera has to offer. This is a fast camera and the picture quality is remarkable. I was torn between the 7D and the 60D but chose the 7D for it’s 19 pt. focusing ability, which I am still learning to use. A great camera for the more advanced ameture photographer especially if you are into shooting sports.

This is a powerful camera! I was a little disappointed video operation does not include auto focus while shooting. Other than that, the pictures are sharp and color is accurate. it’s taking me a while to realize I need to take tighter shots because the image size is bigger.

Pros: Great build qualityGreat auto focus Wireless ability for external flashesAwesome 1080p HD videoGreat button layout with the ability to customize their functionsI upgraded from a Rebel XSI and there is no comparsion in any area. The 7D is built like a tank and handles great it doesn’t feel lost with bigger “L” lenses. I’m not easy on my gear and this thing can take it. When you need the shot to be good and can’t afford the 1 series this is the camera to get. The AF speed and FPS are as good as it gets outside the 1 series. I’ve shot in 100% humidity and 90+ temps to 0 degrees and snow its never let me down or missed a shot. Weddings, action, portraits, landscapes it can do it all. Impressive ISO range and video ability in dark places.

Cons: Crop sensor (I wish Canon would make a full frame with this AF system and FPS rate in a small body)The locking mode dial button now being offered on the 60D and as a retrofit for the 7D (you have to pay) should have been standard. Can’t keep up with the 5DmkII in overall resolution and High ISO performance (but its wokring with a smaller sensor)Relocation of the on/off switch prevents one handed power up when speed is critical, its not a huge deal but requires retraining your brain when coming from the rebel series. Other Thoughts: I would reccommend this camera to any one looking for an up-grade from a rebel or older X0d Canon. If you can’t or don’t want to spend the money on a 1 series, but need speed and AF that you can’t get with the 5dmkII this is the one to get. I can’t say enough about the responsiveness and performance of this camera

After handling both, I chose the 7D over 60D. Close call, and both are great. Top focus and FPS, fit my big hands, great balance, impeccable quality, AF lens, design and layout match my way of thinking. I liked the 60D’s swivel screen and lighter weight and might miss them, but the quality of the AF lens on the 7D (vs the AF-S on the 60D)and the button controls on the left side of the 7D for us lefties were part of the difference. I’ll put up with the 7D weight for the feel and durability.

Pros: Really nice build quality. I really like having all of the features and available on the body, rather than being hidden in the menu settings. Picture quality is outstanding. Camera is extremely quick!

Cons: None Other Thoughts: Just ordered a Canon EF-S 10-22mm wide angle lens to go with this puppy. Can’t wait. Stepped up from a Canon T1i

Pros: Excellent AF, 100% viewfinder, wireless flash sync, long battery life, great build quality, etc. This camera has everything I need.

Cons: None –> went on sale about a month after I purchased it? Other Thoughts: I’ve used this camera in extreme dust, some rain/wind, and have had no issues. It’s bullet proof.

    Pros: A fine DSLR camera

Cons: Not a full frame DSLR camera Other Thoughts: I just want to provide a correction to “Joe in Texas”, in case anyone bases their purchase upon his review. This is NOT a full frame camera. The 7D is a APS-C, which has an inherent “crop factor” of 1.6

  •
    Joe in Texas says:

Pros: It’s a CANON Full frame. Theres not much else to say. Anyone who enjoys the Canon product line will be impressed with this camera. I went with the 28-135 lens as it had better reviews than the other ones.

    Cons: No lens hoods included

I bought this camera for a sporting event. I upgraded from my 40D. The 7D takes amazing photos, easy to setup. I strongly recommend getting the Battery Grip. The extra battery life, is great. If you have the money, this is definately the choice to make.

I have had Canon DSLRs since the day the EOS10D was introduced and have always been amazed by the quality of Canons. However, I always kept looking at the 5D and never could afford it. with EOS 7D, you can now feel one step closer to the Full Pro models of Canon. It is the poor man’s (well not exactly..) 5D. Canon has done wonders with the 7D. While photo enthusiasts may find it a bit disappointing that all the present modes have gone away, Canon has replaced them with the ability for you to have 3 custom settings on the dial. This is great for users who frequently have to change the settings even after selecting a present mode. It also allows for shooting at up to 8fps which is great when doing sports shots. Canon also puts in their Dual Digic 4 processors in these cameras, which allows for ISO ratings up to 128000 (and tremendous performance at that rating) this camera is great for low light photography. Canon has finally improved their AF (which needed improvement for a while) by putting in a new 19 point cross hair Auto Focus and you will find yourself getting you subject in focus a lot more easily now. There is also the 63 zone, Dual layer metering which uses both the focus information and color to determine the exposure. While “good light” photographers may not find much difference, the results are clearly visible in sub-par lighting conditions. On top of this Canon also has full HD video recording on these cameras. I must admit that I never thought I would do any HD Video capture on my DSLR but I have found myself recording a few videos here and there :) . couple of things with the HD Video capability. 1. It will record only small bits of movies. The camera heats up and you can record up to 20 mins of Full HD (its more if you reduce the resolution) on this camera (of course your CFII card allowing). 2. There is not auto focus when recording HD Videos, therefore, you need to manual the art of manual focusing if you want to do close up videos or, really the easier way, keep the lens at infinity if you dont need to bring it in any closer. My only gripe about the camera would be. 1. The built in flash is not enough.. It has never been :) so for serious pictures using flash, get yourself a speedlite to go with it 2. I wish this was a full frame camera and not a APC mount.. (however if you already have EF-S mount lenses you will actually appreciate the fact that this baby will take it all) All in all.. this is the best camera that a semi-pro can own and be proud of ;)

Pros: Love the Focus Points, Fast Shutter, High ISO and HD videos

Cons: Non so far. As long as you understand the limitations of your gear, you won’t be disappointed.

This camera is amazing!First the quality is top notch. Second the pictures are amazing. Third the auto focus is fast! No more missed photo’s.Then I tried the video. I was blown away. This camera is being touted as the independent film makers “Red” substitute. (The Red is a camera that costs upwards of $25,000.00)I am super happy with this purchase[...]

    N/A says:

Pros: Super fast – I can take medium RAW plus small JPEG pictures all day (until the mem card fills up) and do not have to wait on the camera to write the images to the card…unlike my old Eos 10D.Takes great pictures – Really sharp vibrant pictures with the kit lens. Cannot wait to buy an L series lens. The glass LCD display is awesome, bright and high-resolution.Takes nice HD video too.

Cons: Big – A little bit bigger than my old 10D.On/Off switch in an unusual spot for Canon cameras. Other Thoughts: There is really nothing to fault

    HeartDoc says:

Pros: Excellent camera. Feels great in the hand. Great image quality and very responsive. Have not used the kit lens as I have other L lenses. Video quality is spectacular (with limitations) and was the primary reason for me to upgrade from 50D/20D – love to use it with the kids. Very happy with Newegg service too.

Cons: Price! None really. Other Thoughts: Needs time and effort to learn how to use properly. Read the manual and watch the training videos. Don’t give up!

Used it at indoor swim meet with 2.8 70-200 lens. Good shutter speed, ISO very usable at 2000 for web results; NR should be applied for anything above 1600 for print purposes.
