I originally bought this Lens for sports photography and was planning to mainly use this for Motocross and Supercross. I was a little worried about the f4, being you would have to have good lighting for the pictures to turn out right, but after I got this lens I was amazed how great the pictures came out..even in low light! As far as not having IS, you don’t need it with sports and most of the photography you plan to shoot. I also took portrait photos, and they turned out amazing as well!! In other words, the Canon L series lens compared to the regular Canon lens just pops! The colors and everything look more realistic and vibrant. The body I use is a Canon t3i and this is a pefect matching lens for the zoom range 70-200. I must admit, I probably will NEVER buy another lens unless it’s an L lens!
Pros: Internal zoom, takes great photos, the low f stop makes shooting in low light conditions easier (focus will become smaller), fast auto focus, Glass quality is great, tripod collar not neededOverall a great lens.
Cons: Note really a con but I wish it were IS. Other Thoughts: I have been using the lens for years and it has always been good to me. Takes great photos, price has actually gone up since buying.
Pros: Auto focus is fast and just like the f/2.8 IS. I took photos of a mountain bike race, and the auto focus was spot on (just make sure it’s set to continuously focus).Quality of the glass is totally L series material. Light! Lighter than the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 USM lens. You can run around with it, carry it in your Camelback while mountain biking (which I did). And you DON’T need a tripod collar–that’s why it doesn’t come with one. Looks awesome on my T2i, where the f/2.8 was massive and the T2i looked stupid.
Cons: You will need to get used to, or learn how to use flash. In those indoor areas, or if the sun is covered by the clouds in a shadowy area under trees, you will need flash. An external flash with a defuser should help with that. No Image Stabilization, so your shutter should be around 1/160 or higher (again, why flash is needed in those dark areas) Other Thoughts: I know flash flattens everything out, but for sports, it’s fine. I like to defuse my flash, but what ever you do, don’t cover half of the on-mount flash with electrical tape…because it starts smoking and smelling really bad.

For the price, this lens is a steal. Amazing quality throughout the 70-200mm focal length. Having F/4.0 all the way is great too. Yes, it does not have IS. But if you can keep your shutter speed up or use a monopod/tripod it won’t matter. Just beware, you won’t look at any other lenses besides L’s after getting this one. (Yes, it is a L gateway drug.)
Pros: Outdoor shot is amazing. Very high quality. Indoor focusing a little slow.
Cons: Wish that it’s 28-200mm instead of 70-200mm to be my all-in-one lens.
I’ve heard this lens referred to as a “chick” lens in the industry as it is substantially lighter than it’s sister f/2.8 L series lens. I’ve not had the chance to use it in a very low light setting where the 2.8 lens or the f/4 lens with image stabilization might come in handy, but this a great lens and I’ve not been disappointed with it’s performance so far. I’m not really sure that the IS feature is worth twice the money. And I love the fact that it’s not nearly as heavy as its 2.8 sister. Would highly recommend.
This lens takes beautiful pics. My only complaint – the zoom range should be better. The Canon 75-300mm has better zoom but is more clunky with the lens extended. I would recommend Canon 70-200mm unless zoom is the most important factor.
Pros: Very good quality lens. Fast zoom. Good aperture throughout zoom range. Sharp pictures. Internal zoom.Much lighter than f2.8L.
Cons: No really Cons. It is a little bigger than other lower performance lenses but the quality is worth. Other Thoughts: Excellent lens for outdoor sports.

I was hoping for a little better image quality, but for the price I guess it is good. I was able to get some good shots of images from a pretty good distance of say 60 feet and some o.k. shots between 60 and 300 feet depending on the size of the object. For instance, I shot a photo of a person sitting in a crowd at an arena from halfway across and you can definetly tell who the person is.
Pros: constant aperature, solid construction, decent price, good zoom range, canon colors
Cons: resolution not on level of primes, no tripod collar Other Thoughts: I purchased this mainly for studio portraiture and maybe I’ve been using the 135L and 85 f/1.8 too long but this is not to those levels of resolution, particularly soft focus in the 80 to 110 range at f/5.6 to f/14. It’s still very good but I was hopeful it would be more prime like. I mean the 135L and 100 f/2.8 macro don’t need any sharpening of any sort, eyelashes are always perfect, unless error on my part. I just don’t quite get that with this lens. Of course, those two lenses happen to have some of the best sharpness out of any of canon’s glass including the 85 f/1.2. Thus if I came from using non-L zooms I might be mightily impressed but I am a prime guy and primes, even non-L, generally beat up the zooms, even the L’s.
I have only had this a lens a few weeks now, but I am just blown away by the clarity and color saturation of my photos. The build quality is very solid. Since the zoom mechanism is inside the lens, dust and moisture are less of a concern. The only gripes I have is how expensive the tripod mounting rings are and the fact that the lens does not come with one. It is a MUST-HAVE for this lens. I’m sure they exclude it just to make the price that much more attractive(and let’s fact it, it is!), but COME ON, CANON!! The lens itself is truly a gem. I look forward to many years of excellent service from this lens.
Pros: Sharp, Focal Length Range, Constant Maximum Aperture, Fast Focusing, Value
Cons: None Other Thoughts: This is easily one of the best bang for your buck lenses available for Canon DSLRs. It offers L class optics and build quality for relatively little $ and considering the focal length, this lens is not that large or heavy. True, image stabilization would be nice but this model costs half as much as the IS version and you should use a tripod for low light shooting anyway.
Pros: This lense is remarkably well balanced and its’ optical performance is exceptional. I should have purchased this lense years ago. I am amazed at the clarity of my images and the saturation of colors in my images.
Cons: Now that has merit to mention. Other Thoughts: I have used this lense on a Canon digital camera that has been converted for IR B/W and I love the results of my treks out shooting with this combination. For more precise control the IS function would serve me better in lower light hand-held shooting.
Pros: First off this is my first lens to buy for my dslr body. It is simply perfect! The touch on the focus and zoom ring feels very good and solid, and after a while the zoom ring gets a little easier to move but not too fast. This lens is tac sharp, ive taken pictures where i could see every single pore on a persons face, and every single detail of the ball inside of a dandelion! The zoom range of this lens is not made for birding unless your about 5-10 feet away from them and that wont fill up the full frame at 200mm (320mm at 35mm) The range is excellent for baseball games (the batters) and for any type or portraits! The f4 is actually a decent speed, and not having the aperture change througout the zoom is very nice to have too. The included lens hood is awesome and the bag that comes with it helps a lot too. The 1.2m or 3m close focus range button definately helps when shooting things through fences. The bokeh is definately awesome and color reproduction is almost perfect!
Cons: My camera with this lens on now costs more then my car. Other Thoughts: The learning curve for getting this lens steady is about 1 day, which was okay with me. You get a lot of attention in public because the white finish attracts people very easily. I recommend getting a rocketblower or something to keep dust off of the front element.
Pros: Sharp, very fast focusing, ring USM, lightweight.
Cons: No IS, not a very fast lens.
This is a very nice lens if you want an entry into Canon “L” (Luxury) series. You get the great “L” glass and build for less price. This is great for long shots and it keeps it’s nice clarity all through it’s range. It has *outstanding* bokeh that leaves you with some beautiful shots, especially portraits and floral shots…can’t say enough about the bokeh. Has a nice build quality and single barrel means the movement is inside and less places for dust to enter. Comes with the lens hood and soft case to keep it in when not mounted. The color and contrast is wonderful. The downsides that I found…the lens cap is VERY difficult, if not impossible to remove without first removing the hood. While it does come with the hood and soft case, it does not come with the tripod mounting collar which isn’t very cheap when you have to buy it. It’s light color stands out like a sore thumb and I would be careful if out wandering around the back allies at night to get some night shots. All in All…for the price this is a real bargain for a Canon “Luxury” lens! I love the great bokeh, just the right amount of color saturation and excellent contrast. It will be great for a lot of photography but it still won’t be on my camera nearly as often as my shorter, lighter, wider “walk around” lens (Canon 28-135 IS lens). For the price and the glass…well worth the price.
Pros: Everything. Literally, everything. Crystal clarity, sharp as a tack, übar fast zoom, lightweight, a true winner and Hobbyist’s dream.
Cons: Are you crazy? Other Thoughts: It only took one day for this thing to pay for itself. The zoom range is perfect for what I wanted, and picture clarity is second to none. Hand-holdability is good in sunlight, not excellent, but then again it’s not the f/2.8, so it does what it should. Image sharpness is absurd at f/4, don’t be afraid to run it wide open 24/7. While f/4 w/o IS is fine for myself, being only a hobbyist, if your pictures are or will be putting food on the table, I would -at least- go for the f/4 IS, if not the f/2.8 w/IS. I can handle missing a few shots due to shake or low light, but if you can’t just go for the f/2.8 IS. For me, though, this lens delivers where it counts, and I couldn’t be happier.Canon 400D/XTi – Tamron 17-50mm Aspherical blahblahblah – Canon 70-200mm F/4L
This is a great lense. The Tamrons I tried did’nt even come close. The Canon 70-300 F3.5-5.6 IS USM, the Canon 100mm macro, and the Canon 28-135mm that came with my new Canon 40D, do come close, but do not have the awesome focus or clearness, as this lense,I can feel the awesome quality, and for the price it can’t be beat. I find I do not absolutely need image stabilization, for with the lense I have or the others I purchased with it,I find I can turn it off and still get the same exact image,I will probably have to use a tri pod if I were in a really dark situation, but I have never encountered a situation where I need one because of blurryness do to camera shake. Thanks Best Buy for carrying such awesome Canon lenses,I now want to save money for other Canon L series lenses Best Buy offers. Thanks for the great no hassle exchange and or return policy.THE BEST!
Lens offers outstanding quality for a really cheap price. You also are getting an L series lens which is the best quality lens that canon makes. Overall i would highly recommend this lens to anybody.
I’m very impressed with this lens, you can really tell in the quality of your pictures, its very sharp in image quality and the depth of field is beautiful. I highly recommend this lens as it is a L series and once you use this lens you wont want to use a cheaper version lens. Its also great value for money as it is an L series lens which is the canon top quality glass.
