This lens is awsome! It is a my second lens because I upgraded my camera and the lens as well.
I’ve had the non IS version of this lens for over twenty years. It took great pictures to the level of moderate cropping. I printed very few pictures larger than 11X14 and was satisfied. Introduce a t3i and 18 megapixels; add a 1.6 multiplier and I now have a supposed 480mm lens. I was disappointed with my results and purchased the IS version and was pleasantly surprised. I understand it is not an upper level Canon lens. Even with a tripod and a dropped shutter, there is is fuzziness and chromatic aberrations. For less extreme and moderately cropped shots, it does a really good job. My friends and colleagues are asking me for prints all the time. My range of use is extended as compared to my older lens.
I read several reviews and looked at multiple lenses before I decided on this lens. My budget did not allow for L series lenses. What sold me was the USM. Focusing is super fast compared to other lenses. Picture quality is superb and the image stabilizer is a big plus. I was able to get some great close ups while on vacation with this lens that I would not have been able to get with my 18-55 standard lens. Great for candid shots of family. Not a lens you would use as your everyday lens – a little heavy and your limited as to how close you can get. I am looking forward to using this lens for years to come. A great second lens for your camera.
Pros: Good build quality, Good optical performance, not too big.
Cons: Auto focus is poor from 200mm to 300mm zoom. Other Thoughts: The lens produces good pictures but there is one very notable problem. When zoomed from 200mm to 300mm the autofocus is not at all accurate. This is serious enough that I will not use AF when zoomed in this range. I get very nice, sharp pictures even at 300mm but only with manual focus. I have verified the problem is with the lens and not with my 40D camera. MF is tedious and takes time so you will miss some shots when zoomed out. I have the patience for MF but many people won’t. I recommend the lens only if you’re willing to use MF above 200mm.
Pros: Price was in my budget.Works as advertised and I am well pleased with its performance.
Cons: None Other Thoughts: Perfect for my 2nd lens. I can now shoot longer distance subjects as well macro images.

Pros: Long focal length, F-stop that matches the new L-series lens without the added cost. Build quality is much better than the cheaper 300mm zooms on offer, plus this one has IS, which is great at the longer range when light is less than optimal (seemingly all the freakin time).
Cons: The IS motor is loud to me. The focus seems to hunt more than the 18-135mm stock lens on the 60D. The front element rotates with focus. All of these contributed to the 1-egg-off. Images are not nearly as crisp as the 70-300mm f/4-5.6L lens, BUT at roughly 1/3 the cost, this is forgivable to say the least. Other Thoughts: I’ve had great times with this one photographing nature and wildlife. Make sure the light is good-ish and you will get some nice pics. Sweet spot seems to be f/8 but as always, your mileage may vary. I will be trying auto racing soon, so we’ll see how it performs.I held a cheaper 75-300mm and it felt just that – cheaper. I’m very happy with the purchase but will upgrade when time and money permit. For now, I’ll have fun with what I have.
Pros: Pretty good value for the money. Descent contrast and color.Poor mans “L” lens?
I personally hope that Canon makes a updated version of this lens, I know about the new 70-300mm L version which is a nice lens, but it is way too expensive IMHO. Bottom line is, if you have the extra money go with the new L version. If not you can still make some pretty nice pictures with this lens.
Cons: This lens is getting on in years and is past time for an update. The IS does make a bit of a noise. Focus is not as fast as a ring type motor lens. Other Thoughts: First, this lens IS NOT A RING TYPE focus motor (like it currently says on neweggs main page for this lens, hopefully they fix it)This is a pretty sharp lens up to around 200mm above that, the closer you are to 300mm you will need to stop down the aperture a little bit to get the most sharpness (if light allows). I have seen some fairly impressive pictures taken with this lens. The main thing is know your equipments strong points and weak points and use accordingly.
I was VERY happ with this lens. The pictures came out beautiful! The stabilizer worked very well, even without a tripod. It is a little pricey…but worth it. I was able to get close ups of my son on the band field.
Used this lens a lot at SEMA Show 2010…I got some epic shots there even when I was over 150+ yards away from the object that were in my shots. Its a good starter telephoto lens.
Pros: Great light weight zoom with IS. Can be Sharp for the money and build.Great for your back if you hike as I do.
Cons: Not comparable to the Sony 70-300G which is plastic as well, but excellent optics and SHARP, but… I learned something as I jumpedthe Sony “ship” to Canon; compare, compare, compare.*AF can hunt, ALOT, image quality varies depending on the copyyou get. Other Thoughts: There can be huge differences of optical quality in the same model lens and cameras.I know this from personal experience. I tried 3 different Canon 7Ds before settling on the best of the three. I did the same with this lens and found the differences to be amazing.I set up my tripod, found the sweet spot in each lens and shot up and down the ranges, then loaded them and pixel peeped them and got the best copy that I could. No it’s still no C 100-400L, which I own, but it’s lighter and travels easier AND it’s not white which sticks out like a sore thump depending on what and where you are shooting.Make certain you buy from a reputable establishment so you CAN return/compare. I bought from several different shops, compared and returned the culls.Put it on a tripod, find a target image and shoot up and down the zoom and f range until you find the sweet spot then you’ll know your lens limitations. It’s that easy and it works like that on every lens. Use a remote shutter rele
Great online price. I’m glad I added this lense to my collection. Almost as nice as the L series and I honestly think it’s a better value.
Pros: Sure its no L series but it also doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Zoom range is magnificent, and when paired with Kenko 2X Teleplus – 7 Element, it increases the zoom even more, I am no were near a professional photographer, somewhere in the mid range and I bought this Lens so that I could hike around without having to carry 5 different lens’s, I want something that is compact yet versatile. Takes great photo’s with my Canon 50D.So if you want something that will make all of your other lens’s jealous and save your back while hiking, I would go with this lens.
Cons: None
I’ve had this lens for 3 years now and I have loved it the entire time. I used it for every photo shoot I did, and worked FANTASTIC for shooting horses and horse shows especially. If you’re a nature shooter or you shoot planes, or anything far away or small, this lens would work great for you. I’ve had lots of success with it focusing accurately (the camera you have is a big help, too. Can’t shoot a good image with a bad camera, even if you have a good lens). My only complaint is that the motor is loud, but that’s what happens when you get a lens with a motor in it. I haven’t had a problem with the motor noise scaring off any forest friends, though, so I don’t think that’s something anyone has to worry about. It really doesn’t even bother me, but it might bother some people. The motor also sucks up the battery juice a lot faster. Not a big deal if you have more than one battery, but just a heads up. You really can not go wrong, in my opinion, with this lens. The USM makes shooting far away things possible without a tripod. Doesn’t mean you won’t need one on occasion, but 98% of the time, you won’t! Sadly, after having this lens for 3 years, I do have to send it in for repair because AF is no longer responsive. It may have just been from it jarring around in the bag I carry my equipment in, but who knows. I would definitely buy this lens again if I have to!
Pros: Excellent IQ up to the 200ish mm range. My copy was a bit soft beyond that unless stopped down to F8 (and even then it wasn’t tack sharp). Small and light with a nice zoom range.
Cons: The micro USM in this lens is slower than the ring USM in better lenses. Not so good in servo AF for fast action… Other Thoughts: This lens is a good value, but I eventually sold it when I got better glass.
Pros: This is the second 70 – 300mm IS lens I have recieved from Newegg. The first was defective. Thus far the len has worked very well. I’ve taken 100′s of shots while on vacation and am pleased with most the results. The IS is great. This lens is easy to use and for the most part is self explanitory. I like the lens lock feature that facilitate carrying the camera. The two mode IS is also a nice feature.
Cons: The defective lens I originally received and returned would not sync-up with the camera’s AF focusing system.150 -200mm had extremely soft focus – 300 mm was like shooting through frosted glass. The new lens is much, much better however you may be a little disappointed in your shots if you use the 200 – 300mm range often. The overall focus in that range is a soft. Other Thoughts: Newegg’s return to replace system is the best I have ever expierenced. It was effective because I felt there was someone to contact if I had questions. Their feedback emails were clear and I felt I knew what was going on every step of the way. I wasn’t thrilled that my defective lens had to go clear across country UPS Ground to Newegg – but I understand that they had to be sure that the lens was not damaged and included everything it was shipped with. That does bring up a good point – save everything that came with the lens – you just never know when you’ll need to return an item. Newegg approved my return the same day they received the defective lens and shipped a new one the following day.
Pros: Amazing lens for my Canon 50D. Takes great wildlife shots during the day. Quick auto focus thanks to the USM feature.
Cons: The focus ring still extends and retracts. Wish it is fixed like my stock lens. Can hear the IS humming if its quite around you.
Pros: Awesome lens took it to Mets game and got great shots with my T1i.
Cons: None
